i would say if anything a manual tranny. as an owner of an automatic 328, i am somewhat hesitant to mod my car further, because i know that whatever gains i may receive, will be reduced even further by friction via automatic transmission. plus there is just the feeling of shifting that gets the spirit to soar. although i haven't driven one, i am convinced that a manual 318 is more exciting to drive than an auto 328/325. sadly enough i found myself 'power shifitng" my lawnmower while i was cutting the grass. if i had a manual 318, i wouldn't think twice about modding. don't get me wrong, i love my car, and from all the time/$ i have spent, it would take a more than mildly modded M3 for me to consider a trade.the only thing i could further ask for from my car would be a manual tranny. but rich is very true- if we wanted hot rods, then we would have probably bought a domestic car. let'snot forget bmw's reliabilty(witht he exception of electrical;),superb handling, stylish curves, and most of all- its safety, which impresses me daily. i see the owner of a bimmer as quite fortunate, and the options he has as further icing on the cake.
