The 1997 corvette is the C5, the most recent generation, though there is the new Z06. But many journalists think the Z06's suspension is just too harsh and prefer the stock one. I don't think that the fundemental handling characteristics are going to be that different, the limits are just going to be pushed higher. More engine on the Z06 though. I have read the newer battles (with the e46) and I think that as a pure handler the e36 may be better due to its significantly lower weight, better steering, and lower levels of isolation. But I have not driven the new one, so I cannot speak from experience. I just think if you love BMWs, a corvette will not make you happy, nor will you think it outhandles them.
It's from 1997 though, and a new Corvette is out. I'd check out some newer comparisons, in which the M3 and vette have quite a battle.
As for me, though, M3 all the way. I can't wait until I can get a E36 M3. It's not a matter of money, but overall cost of ownership with insurance and such.
