As you say, the engine should go a lot longer than that. But over 100k miles (actually I'd say over 60k miles), maintenance costs can get very, very expensive. I'm not knocking the cars, but there are dozens, hundreds of parts on the car and they wear out with time and mileage. Servicing and parts are expensive for a BMW, so it does cost a lot of money to own an older BMW.I'm holding on to my existing car until I have the funds to buy a car which I can SELL when it gets to 60k miles (rather than buying at that mileage which I did this time)
E36 automobile, a car say with $125K miles? My guess is the engine might be sound enough, but everything else will be just about dead!
