I brought my car into a tire shop to replace the tires with new ones and when they took out the wheel/tires, I noticed that the shocks were located OUTSIDE of the springs.

Is this normal? I always thought that shocks were INSIDE the springs.....

My car is a 1996 E36 328i coupe.
