I have a 92 320i, the temp gauge has a mind of it's own but as a rule sits at 50% (or nothing when it's playing about)

recently it has been getting up to 50% very quickly ( under 4 mins running) and the heater has stopped working, I belive the water pump still be working because it doesn't over heat ( although it has got warmer than usual a couple of times), and the water does seem to be moving if I take the cap off.

Would I be right in cheking the thermostat is OK before going any further, The coolant levels are OK also
