: I'm only 18 years old and I have had my 97' 328i for only about a year now. I love my car more than anything until I heard about the 340 or so horsepowered M3. I still live at home so no bills to pay. Do you think I should bust my ass for a year or two working and sell my car to buy the new M3. Insurance will go up and tires may be a problem too, but it beats wondering if my engine is going to blow by putting a turbo or supercharger on mine, wouldn't you agree?
I wouldn't bust my ass for 2 years just to get an M3 at 20...then what are you going to do? Bust your ass in college for 4 years, then buy the M3 and more. When I was your age (not too long ago actually), I was driving a 325i (E30 model, to date myself a little bit) which I loved. I guess I could have not gone to college and busted my ass for a couple of years to buy an E30 M3. Instead, I went to college, worked hard, ended up with an old '76 mercecdes 450slc that broke down all the time...but now I'm on my 2nd Z3 (an M roadster) and enjoying life.
Really, only you can decide what to do with your life--you've got to decide for yourself regardless of what strangers on an internet message board have to say.
As for your question about a turbo or supercharger blowing your engine...they're not going to blow your engine if they are installed properly and you don't abuse the car. However, my personal opinion is that you'd be better off saving the money they would cost until you are ready to upgrade to another car. If you go ahead with a turbo or supercharger, you'll never get your money back out of the upgrade when you go to sell your car.
