Headlight water jets??? (archive)

Does anyone know what these little triangles under and in between the headlights on the E46M3 pictures (and couple of the 323 pictures for BMW catalogues) are?
They Look like popup water jets to wash the headlights, a-la-Audi style. However, I've never seen one in the E46 coupe or sedan anywhere.
Would that be a european option only or something, since all sedans/coupes I've seen don't have them?
