E55 is considerable more expensive than the C43. If your price range is akin to the C43 look at the Audi S4 or the new M3. If you have an extra 20k then look at the E55 and M5.

: of the least-biased people on this board. Now it's time to get an opinion from a biased one. The C43 is good for a slush box, but the E55 doesn't cost a whole lot more, has a lot more cachet, and looks a whole hell of a lot better. If it's cost effectiveness you're after, you should take a look at an S4, as JG suggested, or an Audi A6 2.7T (only $1000 more than an S4, with similar performance) if space is an issue. If you want to tune your car, pick up a slightly used A4 1.8T Quattro and have a field day. Get a PES supercharger (0-60 in 5.2 sec in a Passat), some H&R coilovers from TAP, and get the race-spec brakes from Vortrag. You won't have the razor's edge reflexes and natural-born kller balance of an M3, but you'll beat 'em on straights, and they won't pull too far away from you in turns. That's just my opinion; I could be wrong...
