: My guess is that BMW will leave the M coupe to take on the 911 (until they no longer make the coupe). I expect the E46 M3 to be a bit slower than the 911 0-60, but the M3 will have a HP advantage (but a weight penalty).
The 2001 e46 M3 will weight in close to 3000 pounds and have 340HP and maybe the 2002 will have the 400 HP Inline 8 from the M5, so, the M3 will blow away a 911 out the box. The 911 only has around 300 HP. The only 911 that will kill any BMW will be the 911 carrera 4 turbo, with 420+ HP it will rock over the Z8.
BMW still might have the better handling (at least against the non carrera 4 porsches) All BMWs have 50/50 weight distribution and only the Boxster has a 50/50. The 911 is rear heavy, thats why you really need the carrera 4 models for the ultimate in handling.
IF BMW can get the M3 out the door fully loaded from under 50k, it will be awesome.
