If BMW is smart, they'll try to get the MSRP of the E46 M3 down, WAY down. If they can get the price down to 42K to 43K base MSRP they'll have a winner for the full production life of the car (hell, people will even add options). At 45K, a lot of the people on this message board won't buy (and with discounts, the car will sell at 43K by the end of the first year or so anyway). At 50K, there is going to be a LOT of unused dealer allocation after the first six months.

This all assumes that the 4-to-5 per month per dealership allocation figure we've been hearing are accurate. If BMW makes the E46 M3 as scarce as the E39 M5, the price will be high and stay high. However, I don't believe BMW intends to make the M3 one of those "out of reach" type cars - it's only a 3-series car, for goodness sake!
