Really stupid tire question (I can't help it!) (archive)

I've heard that wheels with very low profile tires (such as 40- and 45-profile tires on the E36 M3) are prone to getting bent by potholes (common here in the East). Is this enough of a problem that getting slightly higher-profile tires (say, 225/50-16's) for the E46 M3 makes sense? Obviously, a different set of wheels would be needed as well. I realize there's a performance trade-off (as compared with the stock tires/wheels), but I'm not someone who would be taking the car to its limits anyway.
