I don't know. I was shocked to hear it myself. One explanation might be that most M3/4s were leased rather than sold and BMW NAs heavily subsidized the leases (that I was told by a BMW employee). Why that was the case I dunno. When M3/4s were new I never heard of special leases and/or incentives for sales.

The mystery continues.
