: Still being new to BMW and the m series in particular, does a different engine mean a different badge? for example, an m1 or m2? is there precedent in the bmw system to have one car, like the m3, offered with 2 different engines?

BMW has always used the digit after the M to distinguish the body it is using. For example, M3 = M version of the 3 series, M5 = M version of the 5er, M1= the original M car, M roadster = M version of the Z3 roadster, etc...

BMW has never had 2 engines offered in the same body at the same time. I don't expect that to change in the future (hence less credibility to the V8 theory- yum BEER LOL). The ONLY 2 times I can think of that differ from that (not really but worth mentioning) is the E30 M3 Evo models and the different Euro and US versions of the E36 M3/M roadster/M coupe.
