I spoke to a guy from Road and Track about this--we are both journalists, so he was more than happy to speak to me candidly--and he said this "if you are out of control, it means do you want to have your front end or your rear end out of control?" That is the only difference. Furthermore, studies suggest that 4wd is great, but that in day to day driving in the snow and on ice, it is preferable to drive a fwd or rwd auto, because it is lighter and will stop more quickly on ice!!!!...the exception? If you live on a hill a 4wd may be preferable....other wise go for it! I haven't yet, but will!
