Not true, your torque CURVE is what matters...so say if the new M3 produces "only" 250-260 lb-ft of torque, BMW I6's typically have a nice broad bottom end too...and such an engine producing 340 hp means that the torque curve is pretty much flat and close to peak value all the way to redline. Now compare to some monster like a Viper, HUGE torque, but hey...it only builds power to like 5000 or 5500 rpm. The BMW builds power all the way to its 7400 rpm redline (assuming the 3.4's curve is like the current euro 3.2's curve). Well the BMW can have lower gearing then. So in effect, "low torque" high hp engines have lower gearing. Just look at Honda's NSX. BTW Ferraris don't produce alot of torque. The 355's engine produced 375 hp, but only 268 lb-ft of torque...but the thing goes like stink...it is geared correctly.
