Although I agree with you final conclusion that the new M3 may indeed break the 5 sec barrier I have never seen a test in any German or Brit Car mag indicating that the E36 model would do 0-60 in 5.0s. Most had it about 5.5 in 0-60 and 5.6+ in 0-100kph (or 0-62mph). One of the main reasons I think it may break the 5.0s 0-60 will be increased width rear tires ... what were they on the show car 275 or 295s ... dont remember but they were significantly wider than the E36 models 245s.
