Also the new M3 is gonna have much more rubber in the rear than the current E36.. so that is not a factor (especially being that forced inducted E36's can run under 5 seconds with stock rubber). I think it will be entirely possible for the new M3 to break the 5 second mark. 6 speed, more HP than the Euro car, and nearly the same weight. Totally plausible.

: Although I agree with you final conclusion that the new M3 may indeed break the 5 sec barrier I have never seen a test in any German or Brit Car mag indicating that the E36 model would do 0-60 in 5.0s. Most had it about 5.5 in 0-60 and 5.6+ in 0-100kph (or 0-62mph). One of the main reasons I think it may break the 5.0s 0-60 will be increased width rear tires ... what were they on the show car 275 or 295s ... dont remember but they were significantly wider than the E36 models 245s.

Tires not wide enough for sub 5 sec? So what. My Supercharged '99 with stock pilots does 4.7. It aint the tires which will stop it from braking 5...its the relative lack of torque it will have.
