Unless you are talking Camaro vs. Mustang, 0-60 doesn't play a large role in marketing.
People buy M cars for different reasons. I would bet that more than 50% buy an M3 because it is the 'top of the line' 3 series, not because it is the fastest, best handling. There are prestige issues, equipment group issues. (It is rumored that the M3 will not have DSC, while the M5 does.) Most M5 buyer's wouldn't want to 'settle' for an M3, while M3 buyer's might not wish to 'settle' for an M5.
