But I think that even though HP might be the same, you gotta consider this:

Suspenion = M3
Weight Distribution = M3
Lower Curb Weight = M3
Warranty for 340hp = M3

Then of course there's the Quattro AWD versus BMW RWD, etc. I'm not getting into it :)

I own an A4 now, and I'm not sure whether my next car will be an S4 or an M3, so even I can't tell you which way to go.
