: : No way. The GT3 is a race car for the road. The M3 may be a better and safer car for the average driver though. In terms of performance it is nowhere near the GT3.
:
: Your right. Recent Automobile mag discussed the GT3. Twice the price of the M3. GT3 is pretty much in race trim with no frills, no airbags, lowered suspension, lightweight seats, and a modified engine that gives similar HP to the new turbo 996. If I recall correctly, the GT3 is not scheduled for import to the US (price close to the turbo) and will only be available in limited numbers.
: E46M3 vs stock 996 will be a more realistic comparison.
The Stock 996 is a 5 sec car with only 300HP and a 3000 pound curb weight. The M3 will have 340HP at 3000 pounds and should do mid to upper 4 secs.
The 996 will probably outhandle the m3 but it will be close. The m3 will pull away from the 996 because of more torque. The 996 turbo will blow away any car on the planet, except for maybe the new 2002-2003 500 HP vipers!
If a boxster S can do 5 secs 0 to 60 with only 250HP and 225 ft lbs of torque, then a 340HP M3 should be able to get mid to upper 4 sec 0 to 60 times. A 3200 pound 345HP C5 will pull 4.7 0 to 60 times with the 6 speed. (c5s really have 367HP, the Ls1 engine is underrated by chevy)
BWM just have to keep the weight down on the M3 and it will be fast. Now whats going to be sweet is the M3 Cabrio!!!!
