I just returned from my trusty SD BMW dealer to get some parts. I visited my friend in sales there and he showed me an "official"-looking memo from BMW NA concerning a long list of the dates for start of production for all upcoming models. The interesting ones (i.e., the ones I focused on) were:

Sept '00 M3 coupe
November '00 M3 convertible
July '00 330 (coupe, sedan)
Sept '00 M coupe and roadster (new engine)
July '00 X5 3.0

There was no listing for an "M3 touring" or sedan through CY 2001. No 3 compact either.

The dealership had seven M3's ('97 and '98) on the CPO lot recently turned in from leases.

It was very reassuring and even fun to see these items in "black and white" on BMW stationery rather than just in ether on the 'net.
