: Not to start an argument either ;-), but this is a sensitive, potentially volatile topic. What BMW always meant to 'me' is a car that finds that magic balance between being too sporty (read harsh), and too soft.
Many years ago I had a Sunbeam Tiger, with the 260 Ford V8 replaced by a 289 HiPo motor with solid lifters. It produced around 270hp in a 2,500lb car. By contrast the M3 is not that much longer, and will produce around 320hp in a 3,200 lb car. Still pretty much apples to apples. Now admittedly, tires and suspension are much better. The classic danger of deep in a corner, getting on the gas and just smoking the rear tires, however, is going to be a factor. I currently have a 328Ci, and if you turn off the DSC, it will, and I have done this at 193hp. And, the DSC is just a pain on a dry bumpy road.
I am reading the comments on not too much tire please, but I think you are going to find that the M3 is going to need every scrap of tire to handle the power in a short car. Turner Motorsports amply demonstrated how fast you can spin a 3 series last year in the Speedvision WC series.
So, before we all ask for street tires on a supercar, let us think long and hard whether those street tires will cause a great big crash. The e46 is a marvelous chassis, but it can be a handful. Drive hard, arrive safe.
