Offered an M3 (archive)

It's a 97 4-door automatic(which is good - wife), but it has 100k miles. Does anyone think that since it's an M3 that it's probably been pushed really hard, therefore probably in need of major engine work soon? This is my fear, buying the car and three months later having to fork out major bucks to repair engine or something. I've never even driven an M3 yet, only 328i's and this will be my first bimmer. So I'm asking y'all - do you push your cars really hard, since it is a performance car? And how long do you estimate a BMW engine lasting if it was pushed hard often?
