The older M5 motor was based on a totally different block than the new M3 motor. It was often referred to as the "big block". The engine was based partially on the old 3.0CSL engines of the early seventies. The newer "small block" was developed either in the late 70s or early 80s for the 3 series cars. I think the 3.4L is probably stretching this engine to its very max in displacement.
