Hi, Mark -

I owned a 93 Eclipse GSX for 6 years and graduated to a 98 M3/4. Let me tell you, the cars are VERY different. If I had to pick one to take on a twisty road, I think it would be the Eclipse ( insert shrieks and cries of disbelief here).

The steering of the Eclipse is very quick and has lots of feedback. By contrast, there is more assist and a slower ratio on the M3 and it feels less immediate than the Eclipse. Animboy posted a message here that the step between these two cars is "go-kart to refined luxury/power", and I agree completely. Driving the Eclipse I felt I got 10/10ths out of the car, that I was wringing everyting out of that little motor and driveline, and grinning all the way. The M3, on the other hand is SO competent, SO refined, it feels like it doesn't need me, that its limits are so much further than I will approach.

I haven't sold my Eclipse yet, and I'll be sad to part with it (I'd like to hold on to it if I can..). It is a rawer, more immediate, flingable pocket rocket than the M3 is -- kind of like the red-headed stepchild of the road...

Just some thoughts...
