My wife and I have a 99 M3/2, with the Dearth vader seats, and we also have a 97 328i sport. We both find the dearth vader seats pretty confining and really give you that 'wrap around' feel. The 328i has good seats, but they don't wrap around you as much and gives the car a more open (and more comfortable, especially on long trips) feel. In addition, I think the 4-door vs. two door has an effect on the 'feeling' of space. That's probably part of the reason your 328i feels a bit more spacious. I think if the E46 M3 comes with some serious racing style seats with some good side bolsters, that it will contribute substantially to that 'cockpit' feel we find in the E36 M3.
