I cannot say this surprises me. Peter Pan in San Mateo was asking $1.5k over invoice, unless you were a repeat customer in which case they offered MSRP. However, their waiting list was 15 deep, so I opted to order one from Shelly BMW in LA (#2 on the list). Yeah, it will cost me a bit to pick it up ($400 for the wife and I to fly to LA), but I think I'll truly enjoy the ride home.
Shelly was not about to give me a price break, but at least they were not trying to gouge me. I did talk to BMW FS about this, and they agreed that the Bay Area dealers are in general, a slimy lot, and they recommendd that I look at buying in LA. I'd recommend that you complain to BMW to see if we can perhaps change the situation in the Bay Area.
: Alright got some price information for bay area buyers looking to buy from either Stevens Creek or Allison. Basically, the base MSRP is $45K, fully loaded for $50K or so. There will not be custom made cars for the first year, so you have to buy fully loaded. HOWEVER, that's not the kicker. Because of all the ridiculous wealth in the bay area, the 15 M3s they're getting will be sold auction style. Yup, so unless you can pony up more cash than the CEOs and VPs around here, forget about it for the first year. They sold M5s at $50,000 over MSRP, so I wouldn't be surprised that the M3s go for $20,000 to $30,000 over. So if you want a M3 for MSRP, ship one in from Ohio or Kansas or someplace. I'll just wait until 2001.
