Tom,
I put down a $500 deposit last June for the #1 spot on a BMW dealers wait list. In late June or July I expect to get a call asking me to specify color and options for September or October production. I will be given an order number and when the car is built, a VIN number is available so I can follow the entire shipping and delivery process to my dealer. It is not uncommon for the first few cars to be pre-specified by the factory, although I do not know if this is the case for BMW. If you are happy with what comes in first, go for it! If not, just wait until your M3 arrives.
In the meantime, I purchased a 2000 Audi S4. I must say, it is a very fine automobile that has given me a great appreciation for twin turbos and Quattro. The grunt from 1800 RPM puts a smile on my face and the car is quite quick. While it is not as razor sharp as the current M3, it is a blast to drive. I am a BMW fan and know what torque adds to driving pleasure. My two previous cars were a 1997 540i 6-speed and a 1998 540iA Sport. The Audi build quality is also excellent and the sport seats are as comfortable as I have ever had.
