: This is like '00 M5 deja vu. I have a #1 M3 slot at my dealer and just like my '00 M5, I expect that we will get to fully spec out our cars before production. Go check out the M5 archives from '98 and '99, you'll see all the same stuff, eg. "my dealer says they have no control over the colors and options that show up blah blah blah."

: : : What I have been told, which seems to be representative, is when the dealer is notified of their forthcoming allotment for the month, the salesmen call in the first people on the list. Those folks go to the dealer and order what they want a la carte. When the car is delivered if you don't like it you can get your money back, order a different color m3, or order a different BMW, say a 330i. There is probably a 4th choice if you are unhappy, which is to let them keep your deposit and move to a higher number on the list and be one of the first in line for the 02 m3.

: : I was told that once the dealer was able to take orders with colors & options, etc. that the first 5-10 people on the waiting list would be contacted to come in and order their car. Dealer also told me that the factory builds cars in color runs so it is possible that say #3 on the list's car would come in before #1 depending on color choices. The biggest difference in what I was told vs your dealer info is that once I order the car the way I want it, particularly if I order less popular color or options...that I am committed at that point. I either take the car or lose my deposit. I will assume this might be negotiable if the car ordered is pretty much mainstream on color and options.

: : Your dealer sounds a little more flexible. Just my .02.
