They really are beasts of different ilk which makes comparisons inevitable but difficult to conclude. I was actually considering the C5 as an alternative to the '99 E46 328i which I currently own, and the 328i is even further from the C5.

The 'vette is a pure sports car, the Bimmer is a premium sports sedan (or coupe, whichever the case may be).

If you ever need to carry more than one extra person, the Vette is automatically disqualified. The Bimmer is unquestionably the more refined, practical, versatile car. The two also confer completely different images to their owner, as well.

I've driven my 328i through the winter here in MA, which I likely would not have done with a vette.

Another deterrent for the C5 for me was the fact that you can get the most important part of the package (engine & tranny) and nearly the same performance in a Camaro SS, which made the vette's price hard to swallow.

For me it was easy to pick the 328i's refinement, practicallity, and uniqueness over the vette's raw power. The new M3 will close up the performance gap and would make the decision even easier.
