The Porsche 996 is quite a car! I don't blame you for loving it either. Personally, I love the 996 interior because of its sporty look. It's a tough decision between the two cars but take a look at these points.

1) the 996 cannot fit people in the back unless they are three years old
2) the M3 is considerably cheaper and faster
3)the M3 is more practical
4) the 996 will probably handle better
5) the 996 looks better
6) to get the same features of a M3 in a 996 you'll probably have to spend around $75,000.

The M3 looks like a better value, but the 996 is still great. The 996 is also due for a facelift next year(the lights will be taken from the 996 tubro). I'm one of the biggest Porsche fans, but I'd still stick to the M3.
