I saw one in Irvine too, two months ago (archive)

I saw the car as I was rounding a corner (Bake parkway and Toldeo). White, four exhaust pipes, same wheels as the show car. Didn't look too "bulbous" like the show car, but perhaps the white coloring hid this. No special tape or equipment.

I've seen two M5s in the area too ... one of them black and the other a really nice red color. You can tell it's an M5 from REAL far away because of the pipes. :)
