it doesn't matter whaat the rim size is...a 255/40 will have more sidewall than a 245/40 by definition of how tires sizes are calcuated (40% or 255 is more than 40% of 245)

: Here's another idea. Do you have any idea if the 17" wheels and tires on my '97 ///M3 will be interchangeable with the 18" wheels and tires on the E46 ///M3.

E46 and E36 rims are interchangable. The only problem betwee E36 M3s and E46 M3s will be the offset if BMW decides to change it.
