I currently own a 1996 911 Cabrio with 21,500 miles and am #2 on the list at the local dealer.
The 993 Cabrio/C2 runs 0-60 in about 5.0 seconds with a 1/4 in the mid 13's.
The 996 Cabrio/C2 runs 0-60 in about 4.8 seconds with a 1/4 in the low/mid 13's.
The M3 should be similar to the 996 and slightly faster than the 993.
It is of interest to note that differences of .3 seconds or less are considered inconsequential by the car magazines.
While I am still toying with the idea of buying the M3 (due mainly to the larger rear seats in the M3), the performance difference between the 2 cars is not an issue in my mind.
The 993 will, without a doubt, hold it's value far better than either the 996 or the M3 due to it being the last of the air-cooled Porsches.
If I were deciding between the 996 and the M3 than I would probably choose the M3 to due its more practical design...it's a bit tough getting 4 adults in a 911. Besides, I think the 996's are fugly unless you spring for the aerokit as well.
A new 996 Coupe will set you back the better part of $70K out-the-door but a new M3 will cost $15K - $20K less - that's a lot of money. However, as they say, it's your money. I'd drive both and then decide.
