The 993 was probably the finest 911 ever made and I choose it over the M3 myself.
I still own it (1996 911 Cab with 21,000 miles) and I am #2 at the local dealer for the new M3.
Sure, I could afford a 2000 911C4 but I have no interest in that car. It's design leaves me cold (unless you add the aero kit) and it's too much of a GT car for my tastes.
It is interesting to note that this is the first 911 ever made that CANNOT be raced in stock form. Porsche has issued an oil-starvation warning. In related news, the new 996TT uses a DIFFERENT engine than the NA 996. To top this off, a few weeks ago at the race in Florida, the 996's experienced gross mechanical failures - their worst showings ever (these were private teams running modified stock cars).
I would buy a 996TT (comes with aero kit) if I could stomach the thought of spending $125,000 or so on a depreciating asset...(and I knew my wife would NEVER find out!).
I may also trade my 911 for the M3 when the dealer calls me this Fall....or I may not. I won't buy it without driving it first though.
