I live in Anchorage, Alaska and I know for a fact that they bring pre-production models up here for testing. In fact, the BMW engineers are so cool that they actually made up a plaque to give to the shipping company that brings them up here. I got to take a look at it and everything. It has a BMW steering wheel in the center and the rest is made up to look like a view out the window of a car. The view conatins pictures of various BMW models being cold-weather tested up near Fairbanks, Alaska. The photo's are from a distance and the cars are slightly disguised, too. I think one of them was a 3 series convertible. I heard that only one of the vehicles was kept under wraps, sealed in a freight container the whole trip up to Fairbanks.
