Both BMW and DaimlerChrysler have technology development offices in Palo Alto...

Also, BMW has a huge design studio in/near LA, as well as a large engineering facility in/near Oxnard (??). That's why you'll see a lot of BMW prototypes near LA: they use the LA facility as their home base, and then do heat stress testing in Death Valley... I saw a documentary on the development of the 8-series on Germany TV about 10-12 years ago, and they hauled ass with a couple of 8er prototypes through Death Valley...

FWIW, BMW serviced the BMW V12 LMR race cars in the LA facility after they won at Laguna Seca, and before they went on to San Diego -- they did not fly the cars to Germany, and then back to San Diego...
