it depends whether you prefer the BMW or the Merc philosophy.

I prefer BMW because their cars are THE perfect combination between performance and luxury for a reasonable price. The Mercedes cars look too heavy and some kind of "old fashioned" for me. I don't like the Mercedes image.

BMW's are usually better regarding power and performance (one exception: F1 cars).

It makes no sense to compare any CLK to any M3 because these cars have totally different skills and totally different customers. I'd rather compare a Porsche 911 with the E46 M3.

It's depends on your personal philosophy and expectations...
