: Actually, I think comparing the CLK 55 //AMG to the E46 M3 is completely reasonable. It may very well be, IMHO, better to compare the M3 to the CLK 55 than it is to the 911. There is no comparison between the CLK 430 and the E46 M3, however.

: The E46 M3 and the CLK 55 are definitely aimed at the same market. Look at the competition between the M5 and E55. They are two very different cars, but in the end, the choice comes down to whether you need an automatic transmission (an amazing one at that) or if you can live with an automatic. I feel the CLK 55 //AMG will compare to the E46 M3 in a very similar fashion.

: : it depends whether you prefer the BMW or the Merc philosophy.

: : I prefer BMW because their cars are THE perfect combination between performance and luxury for a reasonable price. The Mercedes cars look too heavy and some kind of "old fashioned" for me. I don't like the Mercedes image.

: : BMW's are usually better regarding power and performance (one exception: F1 cars).

: : It makes no sense to compare any CLK to any M3 because these cars have totally different skills and totally different customers. I'd rather compare a Porsche 911 with the E46 M3.

: : It's depends on your personal philosophy and expectations...

: : Cheers
