Don't get me wrong, I live and die by a manual transmission too! There are, believe it or not, some people that cannot drive manual transmission cars every day. If you had to drive to work everyday in Miami (or any other big city) you would understand. If I had a large enough bank account, I'd have a Mercedes E55 AMG to drive to work everyday and a Ferrari F360 Modena in the garage. That way I could have a balls-to-the-wall car in the for the weekends (WITH THE MANUAL TRANNY...NO SEQUENTIAL) and I could also have a badass daily driver that could hang with most sports cars. A CLK 55 //AMG is a good compromise for a sports car if you can't drive a stick everyday. In my experience, Mercedes automatics are THE BEST IN THE WORLD and the CLK would be no slouch. I'd be willing to bet that it would SMOKE a Tiptronic 996 and it would hang with an E46 M3 over 60 mph.

I can't agree with you about current Mercedes cars. Short of the missing manual transmissions, I think MB cars are the best they ever have been. Beautiful designs, the same excellent (over)engineering, more competitive pricing, and competent performance. It comes down to personal opinion, so to each his own.
