: ... I decided to tell the dealer to scratch my name off the list, just don't think I can wait that long. I'm just going to get an E36 instead. I figure I can slap on an AA Stage II Turbo plus a ton of other mods and end up with something much faster and better handling than a stock E46, for a lot less money. Since I plan on racing it, I just can't justify the wait and extra money ... I mean ... the E46 sure looks sweet and I'm sure it's "better" in lots of little ways, but for me I decided it's just not worth it. Has anyone else given up on the E46 and got an E36 instead lately? Do you regret your decision? Just curious ...

You better check the rules of the group you are running in. Forced induction moves you to a different class. I think BMW CCA rules make forced induction increase the output of the engine 50%. For example, a 3.2L M3 with an SC of turbo will be in a class with cars that have an effective output of 4.8L. This is a general rule of thumb, but as you know there are not many 4.8L BMWs.

As far as I understand it, you take an E36 and E46 and set them up equal, the E46 will handle MUCH better than the E36 due to front track differences. I was talking to a guy that was at Sebring last week (he used to work for Porsche) and he said the PTG E46 is a lot faster than the PTG E36.

Either car is going to be expensive, but racing is expensive. Adding a turbo or SC will add a lot of expense, negating the increase in price. The only way the E36 would be cheaper would be that you can get a used one and aftermarket parts might be more readily avaialbe and cheaper (marginally). I for one would rather have 350 NA HP than 350 from forced induction.

Also, you are looking at it from a different perspective. Most people on this board are comparing 240 vs 350, most will not install forced induction.

But that is just my opinion I could be wrong.
