Friend of mine bought a yellow 98 esprit brand new, and to make a long story short, he's driving a 99 red esprit now, because of all the problems he had with the 98 (trans gone, drivetrain problems, etc).

He's now just letting the 99 sit in his garage awaiting a 00-01 Diablo.

Another friend of mine's father loves his Lotus's (is a private collector), and even he has his horror stories about Lotus and their reliability in general. However, the reason I mentioned the Lotus was just as a concept, you're probably right that they aren't the smartest buys (which explains why you see so few of them on the road)

One side note - the Lotus Elise is an extremely well built car from what I hear/read. Unfortuantely, the only version in the US is non-street legal, so scratch that idea.
