that's ridiculous. i don't even think that's a fair comparison. by nurburgring standards, the M5 had a lot of weight to hustle around and can only match, not surpass, the times of hte e36 evo m3. this from a car that has enough hp to smoke tires in the majority of its gears.
but if you're serious about handling, please don't even say that 3400 lbs or 4000 lbs is "okay". i beg to differ.
what else could explain why a stock 996 with "only 296hp" or a stock modena posts such phenomenal times on that track? what, with an entire range of other cars with more hp and "tuned" suspensions. the engine will be phenomenal in the e46 m3, already, if you look at top gear acceleration, it does not surpass, for example the euro m coupe. if something more concrete than acceleration being equal force divided by mass explains this, then call me completely ignorant and i welcome fresh insight.
