Here in the US, there will obviously be a major difference in acceleration all across the board. But for you in Europe, there wont be that much difference in acceleration b/w the E46 M3 and the E36, certainly not nearly as much as there was going from E30 to E36. For the Euro E36 vs E46, the power/wt ratios are almost the same, gearing will likely be very similar, although aerodynamics will be better.

Clearly the major improvement will be the chassis, although the weight will hamper its significance. The real difference wont come until the lightweight or unless an Evo version comes out.

As I see it, it's only a matter of time before a V8 makes it into the M3. It's clear from all the reports that the I-6, at 3.245 L, is maxxed out. Whenever the ante gets upped again, BMW will likely have no choice but to go with a V8, unless they take a lesson from Hartge and put a spacer block to increase capacity to 3.5 L. Just my 2 cents, but I think it makes sense.
