They wouldn't use a car in a road test that they then show at an auto expo.
It's definitely possible that they are in final road tests with the new M3 now, likely already including the press (major car magazines).
About US road tests in general: climate, road conditions, and last not least the fuel quality of the country definitely require local road tests for new models, especially if there is a special US version of a car, like there is for the new M3. They are doing a lot of testing in Germany (coming from the Munich area I've seen the occasional BMW prototype of new cars, aka "Erlkoenig" on the road myself), too, but the US market is very important and deserves special care.
BMW was expecting more early orders for the new M3, btw. They aren't happy about the current situation. At least in Germany they are blaming not enough differences to the E36 for the lack of interest.
