at the below 50k price range, not many other cars handle like bmw. my mom owns a clk but it's not nearly as fun to drive as my bimmer. and as mark mentioned, most of the japanese performance cars, like rx-7, supra, nsx and skyline, are either discontinued or never even made it here to the states. and even if they're available here, considering many factors, like safety, and maintainance, i would still go with a bmw. top performing japanese cars need high maintainance since most of them come equipped with turbo. japanese traction is also not as good unless it's a 4wd like impreza, gto, evo and some others. i'm not trying to pick a fight with japanese car owners on this board, i love japanese cars too, especially, rx-7 and nsx. they're fun to tune up. there're many toys you could get for it like blow-off valve, turbo timer, guages, autometer and etc., not to mention most of the parts are cheaper. but i think they're better as the 2nd car not the daily driver. a bmw with a turbo would outperform most of the japanese cars though but that's illegal here in the states.
i'm gonna have to agree with jim about the bimmer qualities wasted in american driving conditions. the laws and the policemen here are way too strict. it was much more fun driving in thailand where there're many ways to get away with the tickets.
