These were 4th gear acceleartion numbers. Since M5 has bigger engine (more torque) it won this contest. Had gearing selection been optional, would have been a different outcome.. the M3 would have been able to use lower gear to increase torque multiplication to rear wheels. The old torque vs horsepower trade-offs (torque at the rear wheels is the only thing that matters).
