You either misunderstood your dealer's salesperson or they misinformed you.

I would quess a moderately loaded E46 M3 will be about $52K to $53K MSRP with a fully loaded M3 adding another $3K to $5K!

With state, local and luxury taxes, title transfer and license fees, a "possible" dealer mark-up premium for the first six months or so along with finance charges, you will see some M3s easily costing buyers $65K and more!

: Interesting. My dealer (Performance of Chapel Hill, NC) told me that the BASE price would be 40K and that the build price including typical options would be around 46K.

: Was this 46K MSRP for a "loaded" 2001 M3 or a 2001 BASE M3 ?
