It is done by controling the cluth by an electro/hydraulic unit that gets its information from the trotle position speed of the car an how fast the trotle position is changed,witch means if you drive smooth the cluth is ocupied smooth,but not as good as an automatic transmission. but i drove an E36 and i assume the new M3 will be a step foward whith a drive by wire for the trotle.
