I always thought it was entirely all about what was inside the car, not what you could see on some civic for about $30
Granted, the e46 has impressive specs inside, but the degree of "sporty" distinction from the 330/323, in my opinion, makes it seem all the more a toy and distorts any real identity of the car, much less to say that it gives off -M prestige-
